It is the most populous city in all of Sanéa, and once served as the capital of the Duchy of Dirynum. Known for its Baroque architecture, the city is one of the largest in the southern part of the main continent of Cinder, and serves as a beacon of art and administration.

== History ==
Palermo was founded as the settlement of Dyrenar in the southeast of the main continent of Cinder on the 4th Moon of the 17th Dawn of the First Era. The city served as the foundation point for the Duchy of Dyrenar by Duke Cyrus the Benevolent, and the first building, the Terrasumma Palace, was constructed a day prior to its' founding. This building would go on to serve as the seat of the Diryn parliament, and the constitution of the nation would be ratified in the Palace a day later. Buildings in the central area were constructed slowly to follow the Duke's standards, and buildings such as the Consulate, Supreme Court, and Quentinpalaast were constructed over the course of several dawns.

Palermo would then be connected to the rest of the southern world through the SouthRail network, with Palermo Central Station opening on the 25th Dawn of the First Era. The station would soon grow to be home to numerous railway lines running throughout Dirynum.

Further developments would be made with the Theatrum Maximus' completion near the station and consulate, as well as the planned construction of a massive university. As well as this, the city of Palermo would be restructured into three districts - Centre, Hirona (in the north), and Malaspina (in the east, facing the Sanéan Ocean).

Tarasius of Ephesus was a character played by server founder ToiletLad_, it was his first character and loosely based off [[wikipedia:Augustus|Augustus Caesar]] with a strong hint of his real life personality and beliefs. His character first appears in writing as ''Petros'' on the 1st of October 2023, with the name of the character changing to Tarasius of Ephesus later in the month. Tarasius was leader of the [[Ascëans]], and later the Princeps of [[Messenia]], ending his character whilst being a co-Diarch within the [[Sanéa|Commonwealth of Sanéa]]. Tarasius was retired on the 20th of April following an assassination.

For the sake of easy readability the name Tarasius will be used for this character's entire lifespan, though it should be noted his name was Petros of Ephesus until the Ascëan tribe resettled in what is now Alaetia.

=== From Ascëa to Parakascëa ===
Tarasius was the leader of the Ascëa tribe, a tribe who hails from the northeastern lands of Cinder. Tarasius led his tribe into the Ascëan valley, whose namesake is the tribe. His guidance of the tribe led to brief union of Ascëans and Arannans in a short-lived union known as the [[Aranna|Confederate States of Aranna]]. After the failure of this union the Ascëan tribe resettled further south along the coast, renaming themselves to the Parakascëans (Coastal Ascëans in the Ascëan language). The movement of the tribe meant that they now bordered the [[Tsagaan Khanate]]. At the time the Khanate was a great power and as such the tribe placed themselves under informal overlord-ship of the Khanate. Tarasius started work on the Tarasian walls of Ephesus to protect his tribe against the mighty horde. Behind the wall he slowly started to build up the city of Ephesus, with the Temple of Ephesus being the first building to be completed.

Tarasius found himself befriending the Danouvians, signing onto the Sanéan Defence League in an effort to protect his people from the Khanate. Signing onto the SDL was only made possible due to the reorganization away from a tribal structure into a Despotate. Now Despot Tarasius, he continued to develop not just Ephesus, but the entirety of his new Despotate. expanding into the modern Thémata of Parakéa and Mustyria. During this time the Despot was quite friendly with leading Revolutionist thinkers, actually having produced an unpublished manuscript on whether Revolution against Revolutionism could be considered Revolutionism, though the content of this book has sadly been lost to time. It is also clear that at this point Tarasius had converted to Pyrannism, the religion he would follow until his death, having been personally converted by Pope Swonki I of the [[Grand Papal States]]. After his conversion the decision was made to rename the City of Ephesus to the City of Alaetia, a name that locals started using for the city.

=== From Parakascëa to Sanéa ===
It was not long after the conversion of Tarasius that he would be introduced to Luís Kazymir, who had recently fled [[Danouvia]] after its revolution which exiled the young prince. Tarasius would informally adopt the young prince to teach him the art of statecraft, so that he might return to Danouvia to reclaim its throne in the future, but instead of Parakascëa gearing up to aid in the future reconquest of Danouvia for the Kazymirs, the state - and by extension Tarasius - would find itself peacefully annexing the remains of Danouvia after its collapse, as the remains of the Danouvian government requested integration into the Despotate.

Upon the unification of Kórsia (the left-overs of Danouvia) and Parakascëa, Tarasius and the best minds in the nation sat down to create a constitutional system for this new Messenian Principate. Tarasius would serve as Princeps, whilst the nobility would serve as his Senators. As Princeps Tarasius would attempt to establish a democratic oligarchy within Messenia, in his world view democracy was best when it was regulated by monarchs, whose own prosperity depends on that of the success of the state. This idea would be put to the test upon the founding of the Commonwealth of Sanéa, the constitution of which was single-handedly written by Tarasius.

Geno Rodolfus was born in northern Palermo in the Rodolfus Lighthouse, to Micha Rodolfus and Dorothy Sangrino, two members of the Diryn middle class. Micha was the then-mayor of the newly created Hirona District when Geno was born, and Geno grew up watching his father's work in growing the wilderness of northern Palermo into a vibrant retail and shopping district. Geno was also exposed to Moonrisen teachings from a young age due to Micha's religious dispositions with the Syradine Church of Moonrise. Additionally, thanks to his family's wide use of railways to travel on holiday to locations such as Loire and Borinu, Geno's interests in railways grew at a very young age.

When Geno was 15, he left to study in Tintorini University, majoring in engineering and graduating at the age of 17. However, tragedy struck the young Geno's life during this time. His mother had fallen ill during his time in Tintorini and passed days prior to his graduation. Stricken with grief, Geno stayed in Tintorini for the following year, growing accustomed to Ritannian traditions and developing a further connection with Elendarr. However, just five years following his mother's death, his father, Micha, died in his sleep. Following this second personal tragedy, Geno forced himself to work towards upholding his family's legacy, hoping to accomplish his newfound dreams of further international transportation and dedicating his life's work to his late mother and father.

His mother, through her incredible and cunning wit, managed to rise her and her son to the rank of nobility within the duchy. This allowed Antoine to have unfettered access to be best forms of education available in the duchy.

Antoine was largely considered a polymath, easily understanding a variety of topics and even being able to expand upon all of them. By the age of 11 he was fluent in [[Diryn (language)|Diryn]], [[Danuvian]], Fontanian, Parakascean, and [[Ritannian]]. He was respected by his professors and classmates alike for his great intelligence and compassion for a noble. But Antoine's life would come crashing down when he was 13. Another fire would wreak havoc in Antoine's life as he is stuck inside of his family's burning manor. When all seemed bleak and he felt as if death had reached him, his mother ran to him and shield him from the fire. This act caused for a bright flash of light to overtake the night sky and soon after a sudden torrential rain poured down on the city completely putting out the fire. Antoine's mother had been the successor to the divine title of [[Lunaqua]] without her ever knowing, and her selfless sacrifice and undying desire to protect her son unleashed her divinity. But, due to her becoming a divine being, she was no longer allowed to live among mortals for extended periods of time, therefore she was forced to leave her 13 year old son alone in an unforgiving world. Additionally, as a side effect of Lunaqua's powers being unleashed so close to Antoine, he was stripped of his humanity and turned into a being of pure water capable of taking on any shape and hydrokinesis.

After those events, Antoine went through a long period of depression. Due to losing both his father and mother to fires, Antoine became antagonistic towards fire and deities that ruled it. Antoine was never the same after this event, some say this is what brought about his snarky attitude. Though Antoine had his personal grievances with the Duke, Antoine knew that honesty and justice were crucial in the court of law and that a new Diryn nation could not be founded on a foundation of lies. That is why he promised himself to hereinafter to never allow for his personal bias to affect his judgement and that his decision would be purely based on the arguments presented at trial.

The trial proved to be a tense and long ordeal. The stakes could not be higher. As prosecutor Dante presented her arguments and Duke Kazymir defended his dignity, Antoine watched and listened to every detail formulating a decision based on every word and action made by the two individuals. The events of the trial were televised and reported throughout all of Cinder, the world stood still waiting for Antoine's decision. In the end, Duke Kazymir was declared guilty on all accounts and sentenced to death. The Duke would soon be executed publicly by guillotine as spectators from all over Cinder watched. In these events, Antoine found himself as the judge, jury, and executioner.

Her twin sister, Saint Ashelya of Selûne, served as Highpriestess of the Syradine Church of Moonrise from its inception until her death at the hands of Khanstantin Linetti on the 5th Moon, 35th Dawn of the First Era. Her brother-in-law, Friedrich Acolytius, served as Admiral, then King and later Chancellor of the Kingdom/Republic of Istraks, before serving as the First Grand Vizier of the Republic of Ritannia.

When Antoine reached the age of 7, him and his mother moved to the city of Palermo in what at the time was the [[Duchy of Dyrenar]]. It was in Palermo that Antoine began to grow an interest in the areas of law, politics, history, science, and the arts. His mother, through her incredible and cunning wit, managed to rise her and her son to the rank of nobility within the duchy. This allowed Antoine to have unfettered access to be best forms of education available in the duchy.

Antoine was largely considered a polymath, easily understanding a variety of topics and even being able to expand upon all of them. By the age of 11 he was fluent in [[Diryn (language)|Diryn]], [[Danuvian]], Fontanian, Parakascean, and [[Ritannian]]. He was respected by his professors and classmates alike for his great intelligence and compassion for a noble. But Antoine's life would come crashing down when he was 13. Another fire would wreak havoc in Antoine's life as he is stuck inside of his family's burning manor. When all seemed bleak and he felt as if death had reached him, his mother ran to him and shield him from the fire. This act caused for a bright flash of light to overtake the night sky and soon after a sudden torrential rain poured down on the city completely putting out the fire. Antoine's mother had been the successor to the divine title of [[Lunaqua]] without her ever knowing, and her selfless sacrifice and undying desire to protect her son unleashed her divinity. But, due to her becoming a divine being, she was no longer allowed to live among mortals for extended periods of time, therefore she was forced to leave her 13 year old son alone in an unforgiving world. Additionally, as a side effect of Lunaqua's powers being unleashed so close to Antoine, he was stripped of his humanity and turned into a being of pure water capable of taking on any shape and hydrokinesis.

After those events, Antoine went through a long period of depression. Due to losing both his father and mother to fires, Antoine became antagonistic towards fire and deities that ruled it. Antoine was never the same after this event, some say this is what brought about his snarky attitude. But, despite all his suffering, Antoine kept going and succeeding, eventually graduating from [[Tintorini University]] at the age of 17 with a major in political science. After graduating he would resume his role as the head of House Nouveau and begin to truly establish himself in the world stage.

=== Founding of Fontaine ===
After coming back from Tintorini, Antoine decided to leave Palermo and establish a new city based on Diryn and Fontanian cultures and ideals. He would found the city Fontaine at the southern most point of the Vita River where a small Testifikan village lied. With financial assitance from Palermo and support from his friends Sol Aureus and Gabriel Dante, Antoine began the creation of a great city. Gabriel specifically began to live in Fontaine being the chief architect in the construction of the Cathedral of Fontaine.

=== Overthrow of Quentin Kazymir ===

What is probably Antoine's greatest early achievement: he was chosen to be the judge during the trial of Duke Quentin Kazymir. Though Antoine had his personal grievances with the Duke, Antoine knew that honesty and justice were crucial in the court of law and that a new Diryn nation could not be founded on a foundation of lies. That is why he promised himself to hereinafter to never allow for his personal bias to affect his judgement and that his decision would be purely based on the arguments presented at trial.

The trial proved to be a tense and long ordeal. The stakes could not be higher. As prosecutor Dante presented her arguments and Duke Kazymir defended his dignity, Antoine watched and listened to every detail formulating a decision based on every word and action made by the two individuals. The events of the trial were televised and reported throughout all of Cinder, the world stood still waiting for Antoine's decision. In the end, Duke Kazymir was declared guilty on all accounts and sentenced to death. The Duke would soon be executed publicly by guillotine as spectators from all over Cinder watched. In these events, Antoine found himself as the judge, jury, and executioner.

=== Chief Justice of Dirynum and Minister of the Interior ===
After the overthrow of Kazymir, a new duke was selected: Cyrus the Benevolent. The new duke gathered all the noble houses of Dyrinum and built from the old regime a new and even more powerful Diryn state. From these gatherings, Antoine found himself with the positions of Chief Justice and Minister of the Interior. This would mark the first time Antoine held political positions. This period was rather uneventful for Antoine, with Sol Aureus and Cyrus taking most of the international spotlight, but Antoine was content with bidding his time.
